Over the last 15 years, MOOER has released a variety of pedals that feature looper functionality, including its Micro Looper series, the Groove Loop X2, and, most impressively, the relatively recent release of the GL100. Throughout these releases, the company has listened to what loop-based performers and composers like and requested most from these previous pedals, formulating the exciting new GL200, a significantly improved stereo looper and drum machine pedal.
Everyone knows that total loop storage time is one of the primary things musicians look for in a loop pedal. Recognizing this, MOOER has packed the GL200 with a staggering 800 minutes of total loop time, an impressive jump compared to its predecessor’s 300 minutes. This is split across 100 loop storage slots, equipping the pedal to be used for longer, more intricate compositions and live performances.
Due to the many parameters involved, careful design has gone into the GL200 to ensure that loop-based functionality is as intuitive and hands-on as possible. In the center of the pedal, a 1.28" circular touchscreen acts as the status screen, as well as for direct control of certain functionalities. Furthermore, there are four rotary dials and three buttons for fine-tuning parameters, toggling settings, using the pedal's timestretch function, and switching between different record and loop settings, such as auto record, stop modes, undoing recordings, and activating tap tempo control. Finally, there are three multi-purpose footswitches for hands-off loop creation, enabling musicians to record, overdub, set tap tempos, and switch between saved loops, all without having to put down their instrument.
Loop-based music is famously tough to perfect without a backing track, which is why MOOER has always combined its loop pedals with drum machine capabilities. The GL200 really steps this up to the next level, though; yes, it still features built-in drum styles and variations like the GL100, but the GL200 also supports the importing of custom drum kits and MIDI rhythms. This is huge for loop-based musicians, as it will empower them to replicate drum tracks to fit perfectly with their intended sound world, rather than relying on a limited selection that might not hit the mark.
The range of innovative loop control mechanisms within the GL200 is also set to impress. For instance, the pedal will feature dual TRS MIDI ports for multi-device synchronization, a first for the company's loop pedals. Ultimately, this means that complex solo or band setups can connect seamlessly with the loop pedal, facilitating complex and perfectly timed program changes that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.
Outside of the stage, the pedal also has a lot of innovative features to aid in rehearsals and loop-based composition. For instance, it introduces its advanced “Drum Match” mode, which is capable of analyzing a loop and matching it to the most suitable drum pattern, saving composers hours of browsing. Of course, Bluetooth input is also supported, so musicians can rehearse loop-based compositions around external backing tracks if they prefer.
As with any looper pedal, the GL200 is likely to primarily attract electric guitarists. However, it’s a highly versatile pedal that is designed to meet the needs of other types of musicians, too. Any instrument, such as the bass guitar or synthesizer, can easily be introduced to loops, and thanks to the pedal’s versatile selection of I/Os, this has never been easier. Naturally, it features a dedicated 1/4" input, but in addition to this, it boasts a second 1/4" line and XLR combination input, complete with a phantom power toggle. Overall, this encourages musicians to introduce vocals, acoustic instruments, and line outputs into their arrangements.
Of course, stereo 1/4" outputs are provided, as is a convenient 3.5mm headphone output, allowing for silent practice and composition. Combined with the portability of the device, the GL200 is set to impress users of past MOOER looper products, proving that, even with a history of critically acclaimed pedals, the company is always looking for new ways to improve the user experience.
